This assessment task is designed to assist students to explore their own understanding of what it means to be a professional manager and leader and the duties and obligations that are inherent in undertaking such roles. It provides an opportunity to explore the typical ethical dilemmas that managers and leaders may face in different industries and occupations. Students are to submit an essay of between 1800-2500 words that examines a particular occupation, e.g. accounting, law, teaching, medicine, etc,that is of relevance to that student, i.e. their original degree/qualification or past practice. Students are to determine the extent of professionalisation of that occupation using key concepts from the course. Studenst need to conclude whether ther occupation is a true profession or whether it is a quasi-profession or merely an occupation. Students are then to identify two critical ethical issues/dilemmas that are typically faced by this occupation and using appropriate ethical concepts identify the duties/obligation the individual has and how to resolve the dilemma using ethical theories and decision making approaches. This assessment tasks specifically addresses the course learning objectives 1; "investigate the interconnections between business ethics, sustainability and globalisation; and evaluate the differences between ethics, legal requirements and cultural factors in a business setting; objectives 2; explain the various aspects of business sustainability and how these impact upon business strategy, and course learning objective 3 critique the major ethical theories and frameworks and be able to compare these in a contemporary business setting.
