Personal Branding Case

The purpose of this case study is to help you apply basic marketing concepts to a very specific brand:  yourself.  While you complete this case, you will be thinking about your characteristics and how they might add value to an employer.  To do this, you need to understand how you are different from others who are competing for the same job or promotion, as well as how well you fit your target market.

First, take the online assessments through My Plan on the Career Services/Career Development website.  Go to www.myplan.com  and click on the Account tab at the top of the page.  Under "new user" click on "create free account".  Type in your name and the enter license code A994XYNA (case sensitive) and click "submit".  Take the career personality assessment and save results.  This assessment is a Myers-Briggs assessment that classifies individuals into one of sixteen personality profiles.  For more information on your profile, download the Myers-Briggs Test Overview in the Document Sharing of eCollege.

Using the information on your personality characteristics and the table below, you need to brainstorm how you can add value to a company you would work for.  Try not to think of yourself as a commodity (i.e. a one-size-fits all accounting major) but rather focus on unique benefits you can provide as a result of your personality, college achievements and jobs and/or internships.  You can use the table below to sort out what you know that is relevant to future jobs.

Summarize what you have learned in a brief marketing plan that defines:

 1.        Your target market.  This includes a specific functional job area or industry, along with the prospects for employment in this field and average starting salary (or if you are already employed in the field, average salary at the next level of promotion).  Include a real job description for a job you would qualify for after graduation. Unless you already have a lot of experience in this field, find an entry-level job description.

2.       Your personal brand (Product), summarizing what you learned from MyPlan and the table.  Include the table at your PowerPoint slides.

3.       The likely cost to your employer (Price).  This is the approximate salary most entry-level employees would be offered, along with benefits.

4.       Where your next employer will find you (Place).  Will you be attending job fairs, using social networking, corporate websites, recruiters, relying on traditional job postings?  Describe your job-search network.

5.       The traditional tool for promoting your skills to employers is the resume (Promotion).  Include an improved resume that incorporates suggestions that I will post.  You may also describe additional ways to communicate with your target market, including LinkedIn.

Please present it using PowerPoint in the class of week 6 and submit your PPS in the drop box under week 6.
