The maximum direct stress and the shear flow distribution


A thin-walled aluminium I-beam is shown in the figure below. For the shear loads shown, determine:

a) the centroidal moments of inertia IG, In, and IGxy,

b) the maximum direct stress;

c) the shear flow distribution near the fixed end; and

d) the deflection (translation and rotation) at the free end.

Assume the 100 N force is applied through the shear centre and that the properties of the aluminium are G = 30 GPa and E = 70 GPa.
