The goal of this assignment is to show that you understood

Assignment Description:

The goal of this assignment is to show that you understood a critical essay by being able to:

· Identify the thesis statement (main idea)
· Summarize it in your own words
· Find a text on your own and apply the concepts of the critical essay to that found text.

Where to find the critical article: The critical article must be one of the essays from this semester. It can be one we have already studied or one we will study in the future. You may not choose a critical article you've read in another class. If your modified précis does not work with one of this semester's essays, you will not pass the assignment.

Where to find the outside or "found" text: You will have to find this text on your own. You may not use a text that we have studied from this semester as your found text. If your comparison text is one we have studied this semester, you will not pass this assignment.

1. MLA Works Cited Citation: Although research papers put the works cited on the "Works Cited" page (the last page of the paper), the Modified Précis format begins with the MLA Citation. You have a choice of using either reference style. Choose the one you use most often in your own discipline.

2. Thesis Statement Identification: Identify thethesis statement of the critical essay to show that you understood the main idea the author expresses. For example, begin your précis with a statement such as: In her essay, "Composing as a Woman," Elizabeth Flynn argues that XXXX" (put what you believe is the author's main idea or reason for writing the essay.) This section should only be one or two sentences at most. (25 to 50 words)

3. Summary: This part of the assignment explains/summarizes the essay in your own words. The summary should be 700 words. You will have to figure out what points are important enough to include, and which you can leave out. If you directly quote any part of the article, use an in-text citation. Keep in mind, however, that summarizes rarely include direct quotes. You should have the summary in your own words and use only one or two direct quotes at the most.

4. Intertextual connection: Application of theory to found text: In this section, you take the concepts introduced by the essay and you apply them to a text of your own choice - a text from outside the class (a found text).
