The decrease of mass is related to the binding of the individual particles together inside the nucleus.
Therefore every stable nucleus has a mass which is less than the total mass of it's constituents and the mass defect accounts for the binding of the nucleons in the nucleus. The magnitude of the mass defect is a measure of the stability of a nucleus.
