The medieval period lasted from 500 to 1500 C.E., after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The history of Western Europe is closely connected to the history of the Catholic Church because they basically created the Catholic Church.
At first, the Byzantine Empire and Western Europe had a disagreement on Christianity and so they split into Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church.
This resulted into the schism, which was a permanent division for the entire region. Because of all the arguments that came from dividing, they excommunicated each other. Pope Gregory I, also known as Gregory the Great, faced several challenges. He was the one who guided the Roman church. He strengthened the Roman church by extending its appeal and winning new converts in western Europe.
He directed one of his campaigns at a recently conquered England, he hoped that the kings' conversion would induce their subjects to adopt Christianity. And it worked. It seems that the Church did exert a conservative influence on society and also transformative.
Gregory the Great didn't necessarily transformed western Europe but he also had an influence on society. He somehow transformed and influenced England and other Germanic kingdoms to convert and this is why it had a conservative influence on society and a transformative effect.
