    How the assessment fits into the subject/course:

    The assessments in this subject are aimed at providing students a framework to understand organisation behaviour, politics and the dynamics of business environments. The assessment aims to equip students with the necessary skills to understand the constraints managers and emerging leaders face in developing strategies to leverage advantages and overcome constraints and barriers in organisations.

    Assessment Linkages of Part 1 and 2:

    Part 1 of this assessment incorporates the development of a case study report exploring organisational theory whilst part 2 engages students with the development of a personal SWOT analysis.

Instructions: Part 1

Students will draw up a case study report on their own organisation or an organisation of their choice. The case study will demonstrate an understanding of organisational theory including organisational ethics and ethical practise.

Part 1 of the assessment should comprise of a case study report which includes:

  • Rationale for the research methodology and organisational theory utilised including comparisons with alternative theory;

  • Utilisation of appropriate strategies;

  • Critically examine the role of ethics and ethical practice relevant to the chosen organisation;

  • Discuss the role and legitimacy of management function and how this is impacted on by

    politics and the social environment;

  • Incorporate the use of qualitative analysis;

  • Incorporation of references to substantiate arguments and rationale presented.

    Output/Deliverable and parameters of the assessment

    Students can utilise a range of formats for the case study and where relevant should incorporate a range of mediums including graphs, images, multi-media, tables and charts, etc . Use appendices for supporting data. The case study itself should be approximately 1500 words.

    Part 2

    Students will create a personal SWOT analysis and comment on their fit within their chosen organisation.

    Part 2 of the assessment should include the following elements:

  • The use of three sources of naturally occurring data (for example, conversations, emails, corporate artefacts that regularly occur),

  • Assessment of personal strengths and weaknesses as viewed by self and others. Ensure you reflect on who is giving you what feedback, how you appear to be progressing, and how you fit within the organisation where you work or want to work.

  • Critically assess how you are placed or misplaced within your chosen organisation;

  • Discuss the benefits of self-assessment for continuous improvement.

    Output/Deliverable and parameters of the assessment

    An individual submission of a SWOT analysis which comprises of approximately 1500 words. Use appendices to present supporting data.

  • Analyse and discuss how the structure and characteristics of organisations can influence and constrain managers and their decision making.

  • Identify the range of organisational stakeholders and explain how managers can create and sustain effective relationships with them to motivate, manage and lead stakeholders to a preferred decision outcome.

  • Apply a range of techniques and strategies to communicate effectively to a culturally diverse range of stakeholders.
