Suppose you wanted to do a study in which class participation was a key variable -- you would have to be able to quantify it. Would you count the number of words spoken by each student, or the number of seconds spoken, or the time spent with arms in the air, or would you qualitatively assess the overall participation in a subjective scale or what? Can you see the challenge here? A reliable measurement is one that is consistently measured. If everyone in a room were asked how cold it was, you would expect to see many different responses; yet if you asked what the temperature was, you would expect to see identical responses because they would all read the thermostat.
