Problem

Imagine you are a therapist working with a three-generational family. The identified patient is a 17-year-old high school teenager. His paternal grandparents were war-time refugees who immigrated to the United States. They have lived here for several years, but they speak very little English and live reclusively within a community of other families from their country-of-origin. The boy's mother and father were also refugees, having immigrated when they were young adults. Both are bilingual and American citizens. The parents take care of their parents (the grandparents) and they own a successful small business that they have worked at tirelessly for many years. The 17-year-old client is American-born, speaks little of his elders' native language, and is acculturated to American society. His parents expect him to go to college, then take over the family business, and ultimately, take care of them and his aging grandparents. The boy wants to be a musician in a rock band. He wants nothing to do with the family business and does not feel obligated to take care of his family.

Using either Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) or Bowen's Family Systems Theory, how can this family be helped. outline the principles of either model to explain how the family's problem can be conceptualized. Then, identify at least three goals and suggest at least three interventions that might facilitate a positive outcome for this family and its members.
