Study-not representative of the population

There are times when you might suppose that the results of a study are not representative of the population. What is the best manner to find out if the results are obtained from the representative group? What section of the paper must you look at, and what information must be stated in that section? Some papers give details regarding the participants, such as gender and race, while others do not. Is the omission of participant information justifiable in some kinds of studies?
