Problem: Laura, 15 years old, is a high school student diagnosed with anorexia nervosa-restricting subtype. She is the youngest of four children and lives at home alone with her parents since her siblings moved away to attend college. Laura is a competitive swimmer and plays the piano in addition to being involved in the school's student council. Laura recalls reducing her eating at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic because "I wanted to improve myself since school and sports activities were closed." When her weight loss was noticed by her parents who are well-educated health professionals, Laura began individual weekly visits with a pediatrician, a community health clinic, and a nurse psychotherapist. Within several weeks, Laura complied with eating three nondieting meals and a bedtime snack every day. She continued to swim twice a week, play the piano, and attend school in-person or online as COVID-19 restrictions permitted. Laura's parents, while pleased that Laura was eating, noted that Laura did not sit still, paced a lot, and spent most of her time either in her room with the door closed or in the bathroom taking hour-long baths.
