Strategies to escape an emotional response to the stressor

Assignment task:

This is a Student stress lab: Researchers Folkman and Lazarus (1988) classified coping int & two main types of strategies. Emotion-focused coping involves using passive strategies to escape an emotional response to the stressor, including avoidance, eating or drinking, and minimizing the problem at hand. In contrast, problem-focused coping involves directly confronting the problem (stressor) such as generating solutions to the problem and weighing the costs and benefits of different solutions. Both types of coping can successfully mitigate stress if the chosen type of coping appropriately matches the details of the situation. Answer the following questions:

1. Sally is preparing for a series of tests across the next 2 weeks. How would Sally's stress systems in the body be engaged compared to someone who feels unprepared for an exam taking place tomorrow?

2. Emotion-focused coping to deal with stress can include avoidance, such that individuals do not necessarily confront the stressors or stressful situations, which provides immediate relief. In contrast, problem-focused coping involves directly confronting the stressors. How might avoidance be less effective for minimizing stress in the long term compared to using problem-focused strategies?
