Set up a proportion and solve it to demonstrate this type

Formulas are equations that have been used so frequently in certain applications that they have become standard. Examples are the simple interest formula, I =PRT, and selling price, S = C + M.

Many fields, like accounting, manufacturing, photography, real estate, construction estimation, statistics, retail, etc., use formulas to make calculations quick and convenient.

Your initial post must include a response for BOTH Question 1 and Question 2. For your two required responses to other student posts, responses can be for either.

Proportions and Electricity

Question 1:

Proportions are also a valuable tool in business. If the time it takes to do a task is directly related to the cost the business has to charge for that task, any task can be evaluated for the cost. Set up a proportion and solve it to demonstrate this type of business application. (An example might be 5 hours / $20 = 10 hours / x). Remember that setting the cross products (multiplications) equal, and then solving for x is the way to solve a proportion.

Question 2:

Equations are used to demonstrate many different things. In the equation C = 0.17x, C stands for cost and x stands for the number of kilowatt hours of electricity a business might use in a month. Determine the cost of electricity for 1,000, 1,500, and 3,000 kilowatt hours of usage. Also, show how C / .17 = x is can be used to determine how many kilowatt hours have been used if you know cost and rate per kilowatt hour ($0.17). Find an electric bill for your home or apartment and determine the cost per kilowatt hour, or research your power provider for this information. Share your findings with the class.

Participation:

Provide two replies to other student posts. The replies can refer to either question. These replies should be at least 2-3 sentences and should be written to further the discussion.

Discussion Best Practices

The Discussion Board is where you post your responses to the Discussion topics and share your experiences in completing exercises and applying the concepts of this course. You will need to post an initial response that thoroughly covers the topic(s). You will also need to respond substantially to at least two of your classmates' posts. These replies should be at least 2-3 sentences that further the discussion (remark on something specific from the post, tactfully point out mistakes, ask questions about the post, etc.). You should post throughout the unit to get assistance on problems with which you may be having issues. This will also to give your classmates the opportunity to respond to your ideas.
