Assignment 1: Essay

Assignment Details:

The purpose of the ‘Essay' is to provide students with the opportunity to consider their course of study in an organised manner, in order to have a planned approach to their subsequent chosen career.

In particular, the purpose of the ‘Essay' is to allow students to see that they will have the right skills to meet the requirements of their chosen career.

The key issues to be considered in this ‘essay' are:

(A) Identification of the subjects you should be completing for your chosen career, particularly:

detailed description of the subjects you will need to study to achieve your chosen career, and the subjects you will be enrolled in (note: Is there any difference between subjects you will need to study and subjects offered in your intended course of study?)

(B) Identification and discussion of the key skills you will need for your chosen career, including:

- interpersonal skills (including normally-expected verbal communication skills)
- oral skills (including group/public speaking)
- business writing skills
- team-working skills
- analysis and presentation of basic research information
- resume writing
- job-interview skills

To complete this ‘essay' students will make use of the discussions on skills and professional development theory they will have been exposed to during the weekly class sessions.

Assignment 2: Reflection

Assignment Details:

Reflection' is an opportunity for you to think about how your personal experiences and observations have an effect on what you think and how your thinking affects your career choice and the progress you make in your chosen career.

In this assignment you will discuss:

(i) your level of self-awareness - particularly regarding your awareness of the value of your personal experiences - and whether this awareness motivates you to make progress in your professional life (i.e. in your career) or holds you back from making progress

(ii) building and maintaining effective professional networks, and the use of mentors (do you have a ‘mentor'? does this mentor help you? how?)

(iii) your own professional development programme - what you need to do and what you want to do to increase your professional development (e.g. enrol in a foreign language course, enrol in a public speaking course, become proficient in a useful software package)

(b) Oral presentation

You will present to the class the main things you have discovered in completing your ‘reflection' assignment, and how these things that you have discovered will help you make progress toward achieving your chosen career.
