Problem:
To identify the roles that dogs play in reducing anxiety levels among patients. This research proposal seeks to investigate how therapy dogs specifically alleviate anxiety in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The long-standing bond between humans and dogs is well-documented, and recent studies indicate that this relationship can significantly impact mental health, particularly in anxiety management. Dogs offer companionship and emotional support, with therapeutic benefits increasingly recognized in clinical settings. Notably, McCullough (2015) found significant reductions in anxiety levels among participants in dog therapy programs during inpatient psychiatric care. Focusing on children with ASD, this study will explore the specific mechanisms through which therapy dogs contribute to anxiety alleviation, such as increased feelings of safety, improved social interaction, and the reduction of physiological stress responses. A comprehensive literature review will analyze existing studies that evaluate the effectiveness of canine companionship in reducing anxiety levels in this population, providing clearer insights into the therapeutic potential of dogs in mental health care. My attended audience is individuals who may benefit from therapy dogs, along with their family members and caregivers who are looking for supportive strategies for managing anxiety. This proposal is directed toward individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), along with their family members. Need Assignment Help?
