Roles and Responsibilities of Nongoverning Volunteers

Board Governance & Volunteer Management

Nongoverning volunteers fill a variety of roles and assume a variety of responsibilities in nonprofit organizations. Some roles may be visible (hospital receptionist, volunteer driver, home-delivered meal volunteer, etc.) and others may be "behind the scenes" (office volunteer, computer programmer, staff trainer, etc.). It is important that nongoverning volunteers have roles and responsibilities that relate to the fulfillment of the organization's mission and that also provide them with a meaningful experience.

Discussion:

• Review Volunteer Management. Pay attention to the various types of people who might volunteer and their motivations for doing so. Then think about how this information could be used to develop meaningful volunteer roles.

• Review the article, "Volunteer Development. Practice Application Brief." Think about innovative ways to develop and maintain volunteer roles for your Final Project organization.

• Consider creative or "outside the box" volunteer positions that you might develop for your Final Project organization.

• Think about some specific roles and responsibilities nongoverning volunteers might have within your organization.
With these thoughts in mind:

A brief description of your Final Project organization. Then describe three to five nongoverning volunteer roles you would create for your organization. Be sure to describe the responsibilities of the nongoverning volunteers in each role. Then justify each role by noting how each serves the organization and helps to fulfill its mission.
