Greetings Nicola and thank you for sharing your post. I found your discussion to be very helpful and insightful. There was much information that you provided to the readers, thank you. I believe that in order for employees to be happy about their jobs, they need managers who are first willing to respect their own power and position. Managers must provide an environment that is not a hostile place to be. Employees must feel respected and wanted. When they feel this need, the chances for a productive employee is much greater than an environment with disgruntle employees. I do believe that employee engagement is necessary for the success of an organization, however McShane & Glinow (2015) states "It isn't always clear from these studies whether employee engagement makes companies more successful, or whether the company's success makes employees more engaged." I believe some contributing factors for employees leaving an organization include: disrespect, favoritism, low pay for the amount of work that an employee is subject to, harassment, and most of all power-stricken managers. I've been at a job before, where my co-worker who was a real nice gentleman (very understanding and a lovely person to work with) was promoted to management. He hadn't been in this management position for at least 2 weeks when all of a sudden everything about him had changed. He was a total different person, and although many couldn't understand what had happened, I knew it was because of the power he had received. Instead of him creating an environment for the workers to work peacefully in, he created a hostile environment causing workers to make the decision on whether they should stay or leave to look for another job.
