Assignment task: Choose a computer-based or console video game to review. Spend some time exploring the various features of the game. Examine the plot, narrators, graphics, and characters. Provide your analysis by answering all of the following questions.
1. List the name of the game being reviewed, subject of the game, and the date of publication/release.
2. Does the game appear to me marketed towards a specific gender? Does a specific gender utilize the game most?
3. List the creators of the game and their genders.
4. Which grade level/age is this game written for? What rating has it been given?
5. Is the protagonist in the game male, female, or non-binary? If there are multiple characters, indicate the gender of each. What are the racial backgrounds of the main characters? Provide a physical description.
6. If there is a narrator, are they male, female, or non-binary?
7. Review the dialogue for gender stereotyping. Indicate which items you found and why the items are specific to gender stereotyping. Is there racial stereotyping?
8. Describe the primary plot of the game. Analyze for sexism and racism.
9. Do the graphics show all characters as active doers? If not, explain.
10. Are there differences in who the heroes ("good guys"), villains ("bad guys"), and victims of the story are?
11. Does the game offer positive images of people of all genders and all racial backgrounds? Explain.
12. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest), what score would you give the game you reviewed in representing and including gender and race? Provide justification for your score.
13. Why is it important to have equal representation in video games? How would representation (or lack thereof) affect you as a player?
