Discussion -Unique Diversity Issues

Over time the field of psychology has used various terms to capture issues related to differences among individuals. Though terms such as cross-cultural, multicultural, and diversity do not apply to every relevant issue or group, they all are concepts that refer to differences among humans.

The field of psychology and other related fields continue to evolve in their appreciation of the impact that diversity issues have on services provided. This may be because research on diversity issues provides ever increasing knowledge and understanding in this area which all service providers, including forensic psychology professionals, should consider when working with people. Research relevant to psychology and the law emphasizes the need to consider diversity issues in professional training and in the practice of forensic psychology.

As the understanding of how diversity impacts human behavior increases, the need to identify diversity issues and apply relevant ethical guidelines is ever more important. Part of your role as a forensic psychology professional is to be competent in working with diverse populations.

Application: Applying Diversity/Multicultural Guidelines

In the Discussion you were asked to analyze a case study through the lens of diversity. You indentified specific diversity issues and explained which guidelines might be used to address these particular issues. Now you delve more deeply into this important aspect of forensic psychology and analyze diversity and multicultural issues from a personal perspective.

You examine diversity issues in terms of professional roles, forensic settings, and forensic populations. Forensic psychology professionals provide services in various venues related to the legal system including the courts, correctional institutions, and law enforcement agencies. In these venues you will be exposed to array of diverse individuals including professionals, victims, suspects, and incarcerated individuals who come from different cultures and backgrounds.

Diversity can encompass a broad range of differences from yourself including language difference, gender orientation, social economic background, religion, and age. As a professional, you are expected to act in an ethical way when working with diverse populations. By applying specific diversity guidelines, forensic psychology professionals, are more likely to provide ethical and quality service to all forensic populations.
