Assignment task:
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to provide students with the opportunity to review and discuss ethical issues in practice. Base your paper on textbook and external sources regarding social work ethics used in practice (for example, ifsw.org). Each chapter in our textbook has commented on ethical considerations when practicing a theory. With this in mind, complete the instructions below.
Section 1: Personal Biases: Identify at least one personal bias and describe it briefly. Discuss why you believe someone may have that particular bias. Then discuss how that personal bias could potentially impact decision-making about which theories to use, and your evaluation on which would be the most useful in providing services to a client (develop an example, you will add trauma in section 2, your example needs to include trauma as a point of diversity). Discuss steps that you may take to ameliorate this issue.
Section 2: Theory and Diversity and Trauma: You explained above your decision-making and your evaluation on which theory would be best for your example client. In this section, modify treatment in order to support your client as a unique individual with diverse identities and diverse backgrounds. Add trauma in this section and discuss it as a point of diversity. Discuss individual rights considerations in modifying treatment. Discuss how theory helps us to understand and appreciate differences, as well as engage clients in a meaningful way to provide assistance.
Section 3: Self-Care and Boundaries: Lastly, discuss at least 3 of the signs and symptoms of secondary traumatic stress/vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout. Supplemental Readings required up to this point in the course can also serve as sources. Identify how you can personally handle these issues (specifically identify what you will do to prevent and or address these) as well as how you can increase awareness and watch for these signs and symptoms in colleagues.
