To attempt to decide this issue, an experimenter plans to teach reading to two groups, one by each method. The local school system teaches only the word method. %u201CThis is fine for one group,%u201D the experimenter says. %u201CNow I must find a school system that uses the phonics method.%u201D Accordingly, a visit is made to another town that uses the phonics method where a sample of children are tested to see how well they can read. After administering an extensive battery of reading tests, it is found that the children who used the phonics method are reliably superior to those who learned by the word method. It is then concluded that the phonics method is superior to the word method. Do you accept or reject this conclusion? Why? Design a better one.

2) A researcher wanted to determine the influence of meaningfulness of material on forgetting. He varied meaningfulness in two ways, low and high meaningfulness of material. The two groups of participants received the same number of learning trials and retention was measured 24 hours later. It was concluded that the high meaningful material was remembered better. Can you accept this conclusion?
