Reflective Journal : My Experiences with Persuasive Writing

Address these criteria:

1. Describe experiences you have had with persuasive writing (writing to convince).

2. Explain ways you expect to use persuasive writing in your university career and in your professional and personal life.

3. Describe and explain your biggest challenges when writing documents for others (such as your professor, prospective employer, manager, or other) to read and evaluate.

In the process of learning about the genre of persuasive writing I have gained unique experiences. As I did lack the initial knowledge regarding the mode of persuasive writing I faced some major problems. When I was first given the task of writing a persuasive essay, I fumbled almost at every step. The primary difficulty which I suffered from was the lack of knowledge of how to formulate an attention grabbing sentence in the introductory section of the persuasive essay. Moreover, I did also face the problem of formulating valid questions in answer to which I was supposed to construct my persuasive essay. Initially I failed to compose a perfect persuasive essay but was not discouraged by this as I realized that myriads of my classmate who were given the task of formulating a persuasive essay also met with the problems which I did face. Hence, I was assured of the fact that the art of persuasion needs a considerable degree of practice before mastering it. Moreover, as now I have a fair knowledge of persuasive writing, I would like to use it in the sphere of educational and professional sphere. I am thinking upon convincing my professor to give me a chance of giving an oration on the issue of price hike of fuel in front of my classmate and I am planning to convince the professor by writing to him a persuasive letter which will surely able to secure the permission through the act of convincing. Furthermore, in the realm of my professional career I would like to formulate a persuasive cover letter and applications that can aptly convince any potential employer to provide me a chance of serving his/her esteemed company. But one thing I should confess right now that still now I am having difficulty in incorporating a proper analogy in my persuasive writings. And I am sure that if I am not quick enough in learning how to depict similarities in concept in two different perspectives, I will not be able to compose a good persuasive piece of writing. Hence, I think that the difficulty of incorporating proper mode of analogy should only be wiped out through more and more knowledge about persuasive writing.
