Questions when doing the flame test why the magnesium


Questions :when doing the flame test, why the magnesium chloride is colorless in the flame test? 

and the Magnesium is bright white? 

my thought are below: I hope that you could refer to my thought and elaborate this :)

(is that something to do with the electron bumping to excited state and come back?

so the gap for the magnesium is huge? i mean the electron jump to high level and then go back? why? something to do with it's valence electon number?

how about the MgCl2? please answer this questions in the detailed way : the valence number and the gap.... and the formula involved,
