Question
In designing of service reservoirs, how should reservoir floors be designed to avoid leakage of water because of seasonal and shrinkage movements?
Answer
In general two core approaches designing floors of service reservoirs as follows-
(i) In first method, movement joints are designed in each section of reservoir floors so they are able to expand and contract freely. Each section is entirely isolated from one an additional and sliding layer is placed under them to aid in sliding.
(ii) Second means, on contrary, does not make provision to free movement. Because seasonal and shrinkage movements, cracks are designed to happen in reservoir floors such that very tiny cracks are spread in excess of floor and these cracks are also small to initiate corrosion or leakage. However, in case, amount of reinforcement used is much larger than first come near.
