You will have chapter quizzes on course material to assess your comprehension of concepts discussed in class.

PUBLIC HEALTH PRESENTATIONS: You will select one of the infectious diseases from chapter 23, the genitourinary system, and create a public health education presentation to sensitize the general public to the evolving relation between humans and microbes. Acceptable sources of information will be: your textbook; the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website, www.cdc.gov; and three (3) other sources that are preferably from journals found in the South University library databases. Wikipedia M Q acceptable source!!!

This assignment will require you to produce, at minimum, a 3-5 page paper (1 inch margins, double spaced) and a 10-15 minute oral summary of information from the paper. Feel free to add any additional or creative supplements such as sample brochures, visual props, etc (created by you, not borrowed or worse) to help educate the public). Your paper, PowerPoint presentation, and supplemental materials will use APA formatting to cite the sources of ideas and facts within the body and in the final list of references/bibliography.

Items to Cover for the Report and Presentation:

1. Etiological agent:

a. Identify the microbe (Genus and species) and why its important (significance).

b. Be sure to specify the type of disease/infection (fungus, bacterium, Virus, protozoan).

2. Method of transmission:

a. How does a person acquire this disease?

b. Is the disease contagious?

c. Is the disease transmitted by vector or reservoir? If so, describe how the disease is transmitted.

3. Pathogenesis:

a. What effect does the pathogen have on its host? (signs/symptoms, organs or tissues effected)

b. Explain what aspects (toxin production, enzymes, etc.) of the pathogen are responsible for the major symptoms.

4. Diagnosis: Are there specific tests available? Explain.

5. Treatments: What treatments are recommended?

6. Prevention and control methods:

a. Vaccinations, vector or reservoir control, or other sanitary precautions recommended.

b. Practices for improving the reporting, research, prevention and control of your disease

7. Recent outbreaks of the disease:

a. Search the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports (MNIWR).

b. You may also refer to the World Health Organization (WHO) web site: www.who.int and click on health topics (top of the page).

8. Graphics: Data presented as a chart or table m M create! Do NOT Copy from another source!

9. References:

a. At least 5 references should be cited.

b. Use APA formatting for citations within the body, and references.

c. Be specific about which parts of the CDC web site you used.
