Your assignment this week will be to observe, analyze, and develop attending skills. In the warm-up activity, you observed professional counselors carrying out interviews, offering positive and negative examples of listening skills. You analyzed the attending skills of the counselors involved.

For this assignment, you will conduct a personal interview of yourself by videotaping or audiotaping the interview (video is preferred); and then analyze your interview. (Note: Maintain copies of the interviews you make; you will reuse some of these interviews during the course and will need to have them available).

Prepare a tape recorder or video camera for use. Find a friend, peer, or family member and then ask that individual to role-play or relate an incident, conflict, or issue to you. That is, ask the person to imagine that an issue to discuss and have come to you for assistance; they do not need to discuss personal issues, or issues that are really their own.

Limit your interview to a discussion of daily issues such as job or career concerns, decision making, or simple relationship issues. Even in this mock interview, avoid delving into any distressing or clinical issues. Your task is to listen carefully to what is said and then relate back as accurately as possible the content of the disclosure. Be sure to use appropriate attending skills learned this week.

Note any differences that you feel while attending in this way, any new insights into the other person you find. Also note any differences in the usual behavior of your friend or family member towards you as you employ these attending skills.

Then, locate Table 2.2 in your text. Recreate this into a word document. Use this table to evaluate your attending skills, based on a review of the audio or videotape of the interview. Also ask the person you interviewed to fill out the evaluation.

Next, complete Activity 2.2 in your text. This activity asks you to identify 5 responses you gave in the interview, and note how you might be able to give better responses. If you feel your response was appropriate and cannot be improved, note your reasons for this evaluation.

Finally, locate at least three research articles published in peer-reviewed journals in the past 5 years that discuss non-verbal attending skills with diverse clients.

Based on the steps listed above, prepare a reflection paper that addresses the following:

• Your reaction to the videotaped counseling interview in Warm-up 2.1.

• An analysis of your mock interview, using Table 2.2 and Activity 2.2 in your text.

• Your reflection on your use of attending techniques:

o Do they seem natural to you, in relation to your own communication style or in relation to what you observed?
o How would you need to adapt these skills to suit your own cultural or racial group or that of the persons you would serve?
o What insights or additional quest
