ROLE PLAY SCRIPTS: Professional and Ethical Behaviour with External Stakeholders

Read the following brief case study and then the questions. Use theory covered in class and your set readings to help construct your answers.

Case Study: Karakia / powhiri / hongi ...

Recently White Island / Whakaari erupted just off the NZ coast from Whakatane. Many of the people injured were from the cruise ship, Ovation of the Seas. View the video clip of local Maori and the cruise ship captain/director during a meeting where a karakia (prayer), powhiri (welcoming ceremony) and hongi (nose rub...a little like a handshake) took place. Pay attention to non-verbal behavior, as well as the words spoken. Some of what you will see/hear in this video is spoken in Maori - don't worry about this, just get a "feel" for what is happening.

Using this video (and any others similar you can find online) and your own personal experience of karakia / powhiri / hongi (for example, at work, being welcomed as a new student at Toi Ohomai or marae visits etc )... Imagine you have been asked to take part in a powhiri in a work situation here in NZ...

Demonstrate Professional And Ethical Behaviour: Role play which shows a powhiri / hongi in a "business" situation of your choice in NZ.

1. Devise a brief script or role play, to be written in English, which demonstrates your skills at professional and ethical behavior during a powhiri / hongi. Remember...a powhiri is about welcoming and greeting...the hongi ties into this, a bit like a handshake. You need two key characters in your script - one Maori and one Pakeha (anyone who isn't Maori). Your script should be 300 to 350 words in length, to show professional and ethical behaviour in this situation. Show the words you and the other person would speak and the non-verbal behaviour (body language) you and the other person would exhibit - see the role play example script provided for "layout/presentation" of this task. (30 marks)

ANALYSIS OF SITUATION: Analyze bi-cultural nature of organisations in NZ

2. Briefly (3 to 4 lines) analyses / explain why it would it be important for Maori to greet using their traditional hongi in this situation?
