Produce an extended entity relationship model

Course Learning Outcomes:

A) Evaluate the implications of the theoretical foundations of different types of database management systems and approaches used in an organisation.

B) Demonstrate practical skills in designing and implementing organisational requirements using an industrial strength database management system to develop an effective internet enabled database application.

C) Critically assess database approaches and the role of database management within contemporary organisations; and recommend emerging trends, technologies and strategies for contemporary organisation.

Assignment Task 1: Database Design and Implementation

Assignment Details: You will be undertaking a database development project for a client (in this case your tutor) based on given requirements. Using feedback from this stage you will go on to design, implement and test your system using appropriate database techniques and technologies. You will also be expected to evaluate your development processes relating to the System Development Life Cycle, as well as considering emerging technologies that could be used to improve the organization's data management and decision-making processes.

These tasks are completed based on the Case Study Cars4U - see appendix A (attached).

Database Design and Implementation:

1. Produce an Extended Entity Relationship Model (EERM) using top-down approach for the given case study organisation. List Validation Questions (6-10) used to validate your EER Diagram. Use the notation taught in class.

2. Normalise the attached forms (see Appendix B) used in the current system, using normalisation bottom up approach. Consider the implications of this normalisation for other SDLC activities, discuss briefly.

3. Produce a Composite Model (based on outputs from bottom up and top down approaches). Consider the implications of this process and discuss briefly.

4. Derive Composite model to produce a final list of relations/tables and for each relation/table produce a full list of attributes, defining attribute(s) that are Primary Key(s) and any derived Foreign Key(s). Consider the implications of this process and discuss briefly.

5. Consider theory of Physical Design (no more than half a side of A4) and suggest potential changes of the composite model in an anticipation of performance problems for the implementation.

6. Implement tables in Oracle Apex. Carefully consider constraints for each table. Insert suitable test data. As a guideline you should populate table with at least 5-15 rows of data, using SQL Scripts environment.

Assignment Task 2: Database Development and Report

Implementation:

Part 1: Select a coherent part of the final model (Assignment 1) that features at least 4-6 tables as your sub-system.

1. Build an application that will include a home page and at least one master/detail in order to manage the data (insert/update/delete). Higher marks will be awarded for forms which effectively utilize a good range of APEX functionality, e.g. validations, LOVs, MAPs, dynamic actions.

2. Implement four apex reports based on intermediate and advanced level of SQL, two of your own advanced reporting choices (see Sample Reporting Application in AB).

3. Implement a dashboard and four charts to provide management with appropriate information (see Sample Charts Application in AB).

Report (1500 words):

Part 2: Critically evaluate the implications of the theoretical foundations of the current relational database management systems by evaluating SQL vs NoSQL database approaches. Include three recommendations and concerns regarding appropriate existing and/or emerging technologies/processes that may influence the case study organisation in the future. Furthermore, identify three journals that are referencing the emerging data analytic ideas and how could they be useful for your case study organization.

You will be expected to research appropriate and recent literature, analyze this and show evidence of a synthesis of views within your report. Clear references to the database case study you have investigated are expected. Marks will be awarded for critical evaluation, discussion, analysis and synthesis of views.
