Problems presented by statistics of employment

Identify the main problems presented by statistics of employment, unemployment, underemployment, and economic inactivity. Taking account of these problems and using data from the UK and the most recent Labour Force Survey from EITHER (a) Ethiopia, OR (b)

Project description

1. Each question requires you to Identify the main problems presented by a particular sort of statistics. To do this you will need to assess the quality of those statistics under the five headings:

(a) definition
(b) classification
(c) accuracy
(d) bias, and
(e) validity.

2. Each question then gives you a statement which you are invited to discuss. Each statement is a causal statement of the form: This is or was the case because something else is the case. In discussing the statement you have two main tasks:

(a) Finding out some facts

(b) Seeing whether it is possible to explain one set of facts by another.

In both tasks you will be required to take account of the quality of the statistics in stating your conclusions.

3. The statement in the question is not necessarily accurate. Checking the statement for its accuracy is one of the tasks you are expected to accomplish in answering your question. If you find the statement is inaccurate you must say so, give a more accurate statement and then proceed with the rest of the question.

4. Under 2(a) the main skills you are asked to develop and display are research skills (can you actually find relevant data?) and analytical and critical evaluation skills (Can you state exactly what your data say with all the appropriate qualifications? Can you discern when the statistics are of poor quality and when they are of good quality?)

5. Under 2(b) the main skills you are asked to develop and display are analytical skills. Can you argue, using statistics, and reach a sustainable conclusion about whether or not it is true that one set of facts is explained by another?

N.B. The essay analysis must include supporting charts and tables.
