Problem related to thinking and writing

Assignment task: For this reading response, read Chapter 1, "Thinking and Writing -- a critical connection" of Writing Logically, Thinking Critically. You might note that some editions of the book are about 20 years old, and sometimes it shows. For example on page 22 there is discussion using "he" or "she" in the text. When this text was written, the tradition had been to use a universal "he" as if all readers and thinkers were male. Now we acknowledge the use of "they" as a gender neutral singular and plural pronoun. If you notice something being dated, feel free to point it out in your reading response as that could be good fodder for further discussion. It is also interesting to note which topics have not changed over the years.

Then answer the three adjusted reading response questions below. Try to answer each question in one clear, concise but specific sentence. It is okay if you use multiple sentences, but the goal is to get you to distill your ideas and write in a concise manner.

  • What did you learn in this chapter?
  • What did this chapter make you think of in your own life? Tell a short story.
