Mechanism of Missingness:
The matter of determining what is missing prior to completing research is important to avoid losing statistical power. There are three types of missing data according to the mechanism of missingness. The first is missing completely at random (MCAR) which is related to no systematic pattern of data. The second is missing at random which is related to observed data. The third is missing not at random (MNAR) which is related to unobserved data. Incomplete data results are simply a fact of social science life. There are all sorts of reasons data sets are incomplete, and thus how to deal appropriately with missing data has been a source of interest and debate among social scientists (Kline, 2005).
Advantages and Disadvantages:
Incomplete data result from under coverage, nonresponses, and item nonresponses. A disadvantage to missing data is unreliable results and the data not being usable. Having a short survey is one way to have an advantage of less nonresponsive data. The pattern of missing data indicates the relative seriousness of the problem. Thinking critically about data quality and collection methods is really important. Also, missing data can lead to more robust analytical techniques. Missing data reveals the study weaknesses or participants behavior patterns. Another advantage of missing data is the insight that the patterns give into the study's population.
Pattern of Missingness:
The amount of missing data can range from 5% being very low to 20% and above as very high. According to Kang (2013) the best possible method of handling the missing data is to prevent the problem by well-planning the study and collecting the data carefully. Missing data may be due to respondents mistakenly or on purpose providing no response (Kline, 2005).
