Problem related to declaration of independence

Assignment Problem: When reading the Declaration of Independence, the phrase "all men are created equal" was a thrilling addition. However, it was clear that this phrase did not include all humans, as slaves, Native Americans, and women were left out of the protections declared in the document.

When looking at documents from different eras, we have to understand the common meaning of them, as language changes over time. What did this phrase mean in the 18th century that was different than how it would be interpreted today?
