Assignment task: Respond to the following:
#1
Scores: Collaborating=26, Competing=18, Compromising = 22, Accomadating = 17, Avoiding = 16
After completing the assessment, I have learned that out of the collaborating, competing, compromising, accommodating, and avoiding approaches, collaborating is the most often used approach by me. I feel this is accurate because I am very much a team player. I involve all members of the team and agree on a decision before making it, if appropriate. When handling a situation, my focus is to resolve the situation while satisfying all members and allowing everybody to be heard throughout the process. Collaboration in the workplace can greatly impact success, bring the team together by sharing ideas and working toward goals, and help drive growth by holding members of the team accountable (Kissflow, 2025). Within healthcare, collaboration can help to impact patient care positively. The approach that I used the least was avoiding. I feel as if avoiding a situation or a person does not solve any problems. When talking about what the issue is, it allows each party to be heard, and potential solutions can be discussed to help move forward. A situation where I observed an opportunity to reduce conflict within the workplace was when a group of staff members was talking negatively about a particular patient situation at the main nurses' station. The group of nurses was talking loudly and negatively, not only about the physicians' actions during the situation with the patient, but also about the patient's reaction. Meanwhile, other patients' rooms surround the nurses' station. I witnessed the charge nurse at the time politely approach the employees and ask that they not talk about the situation while at work, especially out in the open. The charge nurse then asked the group of nurses to bring their voices down and set a good example for others on the unit. Need Assignment Help?

Based on my personality and self-assessment scores, my strengths lie in collaborating, compromising, and accommodating. Collaboration is the approach that I utilize the most. According to the American Nursing Association (2023), collaboration is an approach used to solve a problem by evaluating different viewpoints and working together with others. This can lead to new ideas and promotes creativity. The method I use the least is avoidance. Avoidance can be useful as a short term solution when there is intense anger or conflict, but it does not solve the initial problem. A weakness that I have, is that I do try to avoid conflict and drama as much as possible. This may be appropriate if it is a situation that does not involve myself, but there are also times that I may be able to step in and help to mediate a conflict. There are many strengths to using collaboration and compromise to solve a problem. These two methods require teamwork, and they provide the opportunity to evaluate another person's viewpoint on the situation. By working together, a stronger and more successful solution can be found.
I witnessed one opportunity for conflict resolution on my labor and delivery unit between two nurses. We were already understaffed for this particular shift, and we were very busy with a heavy patient load. There was a patient being admitted to the floor from our OB emergency department when an argument broke out between the OBED nurse and the receiving floor nurse. Both nurses were clearly frustrated by their work load, and they were arguing over who was responsible for charting the patient's admission in the computer system. Our unit has clear expectations of who is responsible for charting specific things in this situation, but at this time miscommunication and anger took over. One nurse was trying to request help, while the other misunderstood and stated that she was not going to do the work for her. Instead of working together to find a solution, they took their frustration out on each other.
