Problem:
In my opinion, mental illness is when an individual is disturbed on a cognitive and emotional level. This type of disturbance can also affect their behavior. Disturbances, such as an individual's thought process, perception of reality, and orientation, affect their ability to meet the normal demands of life. Concepts to consider Before interviewing Jasmine, I would need to consider Therapeutic communication: Since this is Jasmine's first psychiatric visit, I ultimately need to build trust with her. I would approach her in an empathetic, non-judgmental way to provide her with a safe environment. While she is on this visit, it is also crucial for me to actively listen to her thoughts and concerns as she is getting comfortable sharing them (Halter, 2022). Developmental Stage: I would need to consider which stage of development she is in. She is an 18-year-old preparing to attend college, so she is essentially in the transitional phase from adolescence to adulthood. In terms of developmental theory, she is in Erikson's stage of identity vs. role confusion, which is contributing to the stress of her future, the need for independence, and overall stress and anxiety going forward (Halter, 2022). Family Involvement: As mentioned in the case study, her parents are with her during the appointment; however, since she is 18 years old, she is legally considered an adult. As a nurse, I would need to make sure that Jasmine has confidentiality between me and me, but also we would need to take parental input and value any family collaboration in terms of planning of care.
