Problem based on disappearance of sugar

Assignment Task:

Method: You will place 1/4 cup of white sugar into 1 cup of water and record the amount of time it takes until you can no longer see the sugar granules.

**the "no stir" runs will take considerable time-use a 10 hour limit-plan accordingly.

*1 cup water in the microwave on high for 30 seconds works well. Hot tap water will also work.

Type of water used:

Answer the following questions:

1. Where did the sugar go? Define any scientific terms used such as dissolve or solution.

2. What could you do to prove it is still there?

3. Which method made the sugar "disappear" the fastest? The slowest? How would you explain these differences?

4. Why would we care what type of water was used?

5. This is perhaps the most important question: Why do you think we did this experiment in an environmental science class (what concept from chapter 2 does it help to illustrate)?

Bonus: Did this exercise lead you to any further questions/hypotheses? If so, what?
