Problem about advancing the field of social work

Problem:

My name is Lashondria Brown, and I currently reside in Livingston, Alabama. I am in my third semester of the Doctor of Social Work (DSW) program. I have worked as a Social Services Caseworker with the Sumter County Department of Human Resources (DHR) for the past three years. My professional practice focuses on child welfare, specifically cases involving abuse and neglect.

At this time, I do not have direct experience with formal program evaluation in my role as a caseworker. I have not served on evaluation planning committees, nor have I been responsible for designing, implementing, or reporting evaluations. My experience has been limited to direct practice responsibilities. This course provides an important opportunity for me to develop foundational knowledge in program evaluation.

Through this course, I hope to gain a clear understanding of program evaluation methods and ethical considerations. I want to learn how evaluation findings can be used to improve service delivery and inform decision-making. I see this course as valuable preparation for advanced practice and leadership roles. Upon passing my Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) examination, I hope to transition into a hospital-based social work position. Program evaluation skills will support my ability to contribute to quality improvement efforts and advocate for evidence-based practice in healthcare settings.

In the future, I am interested in conducting program evaluations focused on abuse and neglect prevention and trauma-informed interventions. I am also interested in evaluating programs related to care coordination, discharge planning, and continuity of care within hospital systems. These efforts align with my long-term professional goals.

Bias is an important factor in program evaluation. Evaluators bring personal perspectives and professional experiences that can influence interpretation of data. In both child welfare and healthcare settings, systemic inequities may also affect evaluation outcomes. Addressing bias through culturally responsive and ethical evaluation practices is essential.

What excites me most about advancing the field of social work through program evaluation is the opportunity to improve outcomes through evidence-informed practice. Program evaluation allows social workers to identify effective interventions and strengthen service systems. It also supports accountability and equity across practice settings.
