Potential barriers to engagement

Assignment Problem:

Think about a potential macro client and potential barriers to engagement that have been created by our society, the social work profession, or even the population itself. Make sure to continue to use a macro lens when identifying a barrier. Post your example with an idea of how to overcome that barrier. Here are some example posts:

The first macro group that came to mind after watching this video is felons in the state of Kentucky, who are unable to have their voting rights restored. Kentucky is one of only a few states remaining where felons are unable to vote. The only way a felon is able to have their voting rights restored here is for the governor to restore this right to them as an individual; there is no process in place by which felons have a guaranteed path to re-enfranchisement. Because of this, felons in Kentucky aren't able to make their voices heard on any issues that affect them on any level. While there are groups of people who have become activists for voting restoration rights and other issues on which they are unable to vote, this largely leads to a general lack of interest and engagement in social issues. One way I can think to overcome this barrier is through collective action and advocacy for changing this Kentucky law. Recruiting and encouraging engagement with this population can be helpful, and hopefully by reaching out to former felons to be active in the political process to the extent they can, their voices can be heard and can educate others who would otherwise be unaware of these issues.

The barrier to engagement that I see and will focus on is the stigma surrounding the idea of "getting help." All in all, I do think that our society is moving in a positive direction in terms of engagement for this population and seeking help for various conditions. For example, I think technology and social media have played a huge part in terms of advocacy and representation. I definitely feel that continuing to spread awareness in this format is helpful to break down those social barriers. On the other hand, I think there is a long-standing history in the United States with the concept of individual responsibility and action when it comes to mental health problems and in many other respects, hence "The American Dream." While a lot of the population could tremendously benefit from better access to mental health care, I think we should also emphasize and help to break down the social barriers and stigma associated with seeking help for our mental health. I can't imagine the people in this society who are too stigmatized, oppressed, or condemned by themselves or support systems to reach out for the first time.
