Phases of the conflict communication cycle

Case Scenario:

Question 1

Using the process approach, identify each of the phases of the conflict communication cycle in the following narrative (prelude, triggering event, initiation, differentiation, and resolution).

Please fully explain your answer.

I was having dinner with my parents. When the topics of politics arose, I made a negative comment about the current U.S. president, in response to which my father called me an idiot. I felt my dad wasn't even listening to my point of view but rather looking for ways to criticize me. I told him that he wasn't listening. This in turn angered him and he told me that I'm someone impossible to carry on a conversation with. I told him that he was regressing to the way he treated me when I was a child. He then said, "When is your attitude going to change? Are you ever going to grow up?" I told him I was trying but felt that he was too demanding in his expectations of my maturity. As usual, my mother was eating without saying anything.

Question 2

You are a basketball player on the university team. You go to practice and work as hard as anyone else, and know all the plays. You previously went to your coach and asked why you weren't playing in the games. You felt that he had favorite players, and since they didn't include you, you weren'treceiving the opportunities that you should as a member of the team. The coach replied that since he picked the team, he owned it, and he would decide who played. He suggested that you quit if you didn't like it. How would you approach this situation? Think about the communication options in conflict to fully explain your answer.
