It is not enough to create a plan of improvement for each employee; the plan must be monitored so you can work together with each staff member to ensure his or her optimal achievements. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) states that monitor- ing is a critical stage in the success of this process.

“The regulatory requirements for monitoring performance include conducting progress reviews with employees where their performance is compared against their elements and standards. Ongoing monitoring provides the supervisor the opportunity to check how well employees are meeting predetermined standards and to make changes to unrealistic or problematic standards. By monitoring continually, supervisors can identify unacceptable per- formance at any time during the appraisal period and provide assis- tance to address such performance rather than wait until the end of the period when summary rating levels are assigned.”

Create a schedule for monitoring your employees’ progress in accomplishing those action items listed in their performance improvement plans.
