Communication barrier has been a great problem nowadays. There is a lot of communication barriers nowadays faced by everyone. Communication barrier occurs when the receiver of a message does not quite understand it in the same terms and sense that was intended by the sender. This leads to a breakdown in communication between the two. To ensure smooth and productive communication, it is important to overcome the barriers that bring about communication breakdown. In this paper, therefore, we look at how we can overcome communication barriers between two parties.

One of the simplest ways of overcoming communication barriers is using simple language. Different people have different people understanding and level of knowledge on a certain language. This can have great effects especially when some words are ambiguous and not easy to understand. Using simple language will ensure that the receiver of the message can easily interpret the message that was intended for them.When you are fully engaged, you engage others, (Friedman, 2011).

Another way to overcome communication barriers is being a good listener. Most of the time, a lot of information is lost simply because the listener was not attentive enough. There is a whole world of difference between listening and hearing. Listening attentively will ensure that the recipient of the message receives all the important details that were intended for him or her.

In any given situation the medium, or media, for communication must be selected. One medium may work better than another. However, in many cases a combination of media may be used for the communication process to function effectively.
In business, for example, the personal qualities of the manager should be a consideration in media selection. A business manager, should recognize his or her strengths and limitations. They should evaluate their successes and failures in communication and plan to use the media that best fits their style and qualities. However, if communication construct is to add value to theory, research, and practice in its own right, it must be distinguished from related constructs, (Brink & Costigan, 2015).

Generally, managers make more frequent use of oral, rather than written, communication. However, the media one selects for communication in a particular situation should correlate with the feedback requirements. A communication failure or partial failure could occur if the media you select for transmittal of a message is inappropriate and necessary feedback is not received. Most simple messages can be transmitted orally - either in a face-to-face discussion, formal briefing, or meeting of the staff. More complex messages should be written in a directive, instruction, memorandum, or report. Very complex messages should be transmitted in both oral and written form. Repetition and review of an oral communication in written form can be a facilitating device.

You can transmit a better message if you can put yourself in the receiver's place and analyze the message from his viewpoint. The same holds true for the receiver. He must be able to empathize with you. That is, the sender, as well as the receiver, must try to project himself into the other's personality if he wants to increase his potential for effective communication.
