Discussion:

Nursing theory is defined as a belief, policy or procedure proposed or followed as the basis of action (Petiprin, 2016). I do believe some theories and models organize logical information already in practice, some are extremely complicated and difficult to understand how it relates to nursing practice.

Todays nursing practice is very diverse and relies on experience, advanced technology, clinical skills and economics. Many nursing careers today do not provide direct patient care and therefore theories are not relevant to their practice.

Working for an institution that provides direct care, the practice is guided by protocols, policies, procedures (none of which is written by nurses most times), clinical knowledge and critical thinking guides the nursing practice.

Most expert nurses I have encountered have only an associate degree, and years of experience. I have witnessed them correcting new doctors and making suggestions to experience doctors on many occasions. They have no knowledge of nursing theories yet they are some of the most caring and knowledgeable expert nurses I have met.

Characteristics of nursing theories are in my opinion common senses, no one theory works for every patient nor can every theory be applied to the same patient unlike clinical skills which are practical and is the tool which ultimately determine the patient'soutcome.

Nursing practice creates an environment that fosters nurse patient relationships, a detailed assessment to identify direct and indirect needs of each patient, create a treatment plan which sometimes requires collaboration to achieve a positive outcome. Every medical provider starts out as novice and through furthering their education and experience becomes an expert, that is the natural progression of any career.

Last nine weeks I covered the same theories as I did during my bachelors. The meaning, goals, characteristics did not change as an advanced practice nursing student so my philosophy has not changed. Fortunately, I had a wonderful professor teaching the class who made it interesting but, the information I took away remained the same. I will continue to grow and strive to be better because I am passionate about nursing and helping people to achieve their peak wellness potential.
