1. Symbol: anything that carries a meaning.
2. Language: a system of shared symbols both oral and non-oral for the purpose of surviving in an environment. Saphir-Whorf hypothesis: language frames (shapes) the way we perceive (see) the world.
a. Verbal: oral symbols developed by a people within a geographical and climatic setting to survive.
b. Non-verbal: non-verbal symbols such as body language, gestures and physical signs to express ideas, emotions and opinions.
3. Norms: rules and expectations of behavior
FOLKWAYS- norms with little moral significance MORES (pronounced morays) -norms with great moral significance.
4. Values: standards by which members of a culture define what is good or bad, beautiful or ugly, goals, etc.
5. Technology: an application of cultural knowledge to the task of living in a physical environment.
