Waiting line models (queueing)

Module D describes several variations of waiting line models, each with a different set of solution equations that can be modeled using POM for Windows and other software.

There are four main models noted:

Single Channel Systems.

Constant Service Time Systems.

Multiple Channel Systems.

Limited Population Systems.

1. Drawing on your own experience of types of production and service systems choose an example of an application for each of the four models listed above. Note why each model would apply. Note the limitations of each model along with an explanation.

2. Conceptualize a “large-scale” application of waiting line theory that would solve or at least shed some light on a large-scale problem common to a facet of society. Be sure to have description of that application, and a brief discussion of why and how waiting line theory might be used to provide insight or a solution to a problem.

For example "How you would use waiting line theory to explain why my Super Wal-Mart has 26 cash register stations and only four open at any given time? Maybe as a solution- designing a software program for their system that examines the arrival and service times at open registers and automatically calls for opening new lines when service times or arrival rates exceed certain parameters"
