Mgmt 359 - management of change and conflict - develop an

As a culminating class project, each student will develop an action plan for creating and leading change and managing conflict, which demonstrates mastery of course content and the ability to apply the course learning (including change and conflict models and strategies) in organizational settings.

The action plan must:

- Identify the type of organization within which change will be implemented

- Discuss the need for change (what problem, gap, etc. exist that necessitate change), including a stakeholder analysis (i.e. key decision makers and those affected by, or that have a stake in the proposed change)

- Clearly articulate the proposed change, which must demonstrate congruence with stated need for change

- Identify the organizational readiness for change, and/or the steps necessary to create one

- Identify the change agent and his or her role in the change plan/process

- Include a model for change that is customized to the particular organizational setting. (Identify the model - Kotter, Harvey, etc., if a hybrid model is used, and discuss which aspects were incorporated from which models and why)

- Describe the steps of the change process (exploring the model selected) with adequate examples

- Take into account relevant aspects of the change process such as:

o Various sources of resistance to change, and strategies to address them
o The influence of organizational culture as it relates to change/conflict
o The application of conflict management skills
o Making the change "stick" (institutionalization of change)

The final class session will include the submission and ten-minute presentation of this action plan. *Remember that this project is a demonstration of each student's mastery of this subject. As such, appropriate writing, formatting and professional presentation are required.

This assignment meets the course and program outcomes and must be used for outcomes assessment.

3. Oral Presentations

4. Group Assignments

5. Individual Assignments

As part of the individual assignments, each student is required to maintain a Structured Log (Blog) throughout the term, detailing their experiences between class sessions as those experiences reflect an awareness and understanding of the dynamics of change and conflict in the organization of which the student is a member, or of which the student is familiar. Class learning will be integrated as part of the analysis of these experiences. Insights captured in the log will be (selectively) verbally shared in class sessions beginning with the third seminar. The blogs will be reviewed for faculty comment and graded three times during the term. They will be posted on Blackboard using the blog feature.

Note: The organization is a City Government.
