Mental illnesses in the u.s. and around the world

Problem: Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses in the U.S. and around the world. However, our public perception of this illness is not always positive. In general, depressed people are not as socially acceptable as undepressed people. They are perceived as not fun to be with and therefore, there is a tendency for others to avoid or even reject them. How can we tell the difference between a person who is suffering from a depressive disorder, and one who is just "feeling down" or "feeling the blues"? What are the main characteristics of depression and what are the criteria needed before a diagnosis of depression can be given? Why are we so intolerant of depressed people, and why don't attempts to cheer depressed people up work? Can you provide me with one or two scholarly APA-formatted citations/references Barlow, D. H., Durand, V. M., & Hofmann, S. H. G. (2023). Psychopathology: An Integrative Approach to Mental Disorders. Cengage Learning. Need Assignment Help?
