Management role varies from working side-by-side with people

Joe, a freshly hired manager for Best Made Mfg., lasted mere 3 weeks before being placed back into his prior position on production line. Rumor mill (that tends to be correct at Best Made) said it was case of Joe's expectations and those of upper management being greatly different when it came to what management position entailed. Joe expected to be doing mostly sismilar work with more pay and perhaps few more meetings. He discovered himself faced with work unit full of his former peers whom he saw (and who saw him) in whole new light.

Describe management role and how it varies from working side-by-side with same people in production role. Describe how might this episode have been avoided?
