Use only this book as a source: (Philosophy of language: the big questions edited by Andrea Nye). Write three essays, each between 2 and 5 pages in length.

Part I: Locke's theory of meaning Explain Locke's theory of how words have meaning. What are the strengths and weaknesses of this theory? Is Locke's view an example of what Hilary Putnam calls a "magical theory of reference?" Explain your answer and argue for or against Locke's theory of meaning.

Part II: Frege's theory of meaning Explain Frege's theory of sense and meaning (reference). What are Fregean senses? How do senses differ from ideas and from physical objects? How does Frege aregue that proper names have senses? What are the strengths and weaknesses of Frege's theory? Critically compare Frege's theory to Locke's. Argue for the advantages of one theory over the other.

Part III: Function vs. Structure John Dewey presents a functional view of language as an instrument for the social coordination of behavior. Emil Beneviste argues generally against functional theories of language. What is at issue in this debate? Critically compare and contrast the views of these thinkers about the relation between the structural and functional features of language.
