Literature depicting contentious social issues


Critics can make the argument about literature depicting contentious social issues such as political, immigration; strife or even globalization should be classified as "activism" rather than "art" itself. Authors say that their work is "art" and "activism", but would acknowledge the fact that they are making a direct and specific critique of certain societal "institutions" as they write fiction about life. These may be critiques of literal institutions - state and schools, public offices, etc. or "cultural" institutions that are more metaphoric, and reflect people's practices, i.e. "the institution or marriage", the "cultural norm" of people deciding to live together in "ethnic" communities


In the books called Native Speaker by Chang- Rae Lee or A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid talk about a specific critique about institutions that you think the authors are trying to say through their work. Give examples to support your answer. Pick one of the books.

The example can be about a certain thing that was said in the book, such as character relationship involving two people, character development over the span from the beginning to the end.
