Case Study A

Nina is the manager at Southern clinic centre in Melbourne CBD. This afternoon, a young mother, Kirra is coming to meet Nina for a consultation about her 2 years old son., Adoni. The young mother had spoken on the phone with Nina earlier, asking if the young mothers' sister could accompany her son in the consultation. Nina refused and said that she would prefer the parent come alone for the first time.
the young mother's patient form confirms that they are of Aborigional or Torres Strait Islander descent.

Nina was very busy when the mother came into the clinic with her young son. Nina (Smiles, makingeye contact): Hi, how are you.

Young mother( looking afround the patient room): Good.

Nina takes the young mother into the room and as she is busy, she leaves the young mother with Danny( another nurse).

Danny asks the young mother about what Adoni likes to do. he waits a couple of seconds and when the mother hasn't responded, he prompts her further, asking if Adoni enjoys painting, reading or playing outside. the mother says yes. When Nina returns and asks the young mother how she finds the clinic, the young mother simply answers, "yes", "yes".

Using the information in the case study, answerthe following questions:

Case Study B

Toby is an Elder who is assisting in the evaluation of a community service that offers numerous health, education and leisurely activities to membersof the community. Most serviceusers are from Aboriginal and / or Torres StraitIslander communities and travel various distances every week to participate.

Toby has been asked interview questionsand has been involved in small groupdiscussion to help identify how best to improve the cultural safety in the service. Toby is one of several elders who are involved and over many weeks have developed a set of measures that can be used to analyse the cultural safety of the centre.

After the analysis took place, a couple of issues were identified, including:

A couple of the newer staffmembers lacking an understanding of ATSI customsand traditions. Leisurely activities not promotingATSI culture as accurately as it should.

Not enough ATSI people workingin the service.

Case Study C

Linda, a midwife who previously worked in a public hospital, has decided to begin working at a health service in a remote town in the Northern Territory. Linda has been working in the service for two weeks now and is having trouble adjusting to the new setting. There are many ATSI patients who use the service, who are reluctant to talk to her or look her in the eye. She is finding it very hard to get the required information from them to address their health concerns. Because of the barriers in communication, she is startingto question her competence as a nurse at the service.

Using the information in the case study, answerthe following questions:
