Problem:
Mercedes just moved into an all-girls boarding school for the start of the fall semester. Across the hall she observes a very timid looking student, Bernadetta. Mercedes knocked on Bernadetta's door to introduce herself but there was no reply. Over the next couple of months Mercedes would see Bernadetta attend classes but she would arrive late and leave early so Mercedes never had a chance to talk to her. When it was time to eat Mercedes would observe Bernadetta take food back to her dorm and would never eat in the dining hall. At the start of the following spring semester Mercedes stopped Bernadetta before she could make it back to her dorm to say "hi" and ask her why Bernadetta never ate with the other girls. Mortified that Mercedes admitted to watching her, Bernadetta broke out into tears and ran away. Feeling bad for upsetting Bernadetta, Mercedes wrote an apology and slid it under Bernadetta's door, explaining that she wanted to be her friend and get to know her. A week later Bernadetta visited Mercedes in her dorm and explained that she has trouble making friends because she cannot stop worrying about what others are thinking of her. She went on to explain how she feels safest in her dorm, alone where people cannot "watch her".
